Somehow the start of a new school year always seems to sneak up on us. I often question, am I ready?

Starting college is a thrilling experience filled with new opportunities, challenges, and the promise of personal growth. As a freshman embarking on the journey of studying Public Relations, you're entering a dynamic and ever-evolving industry. However, starting something new is scary for most. While it is important to do well in classes, the key to success is getting involved and seeing what sparks your interest. Now, how does one freshman do that? Here are a few tips and tricks that I have learned as a first-semester freshman beginning my PR journey.

  1. Join PR-related clubs and organizations:
The fabulous thing about college is the vast array of clubs and organizations catering to various interests, including PR. It’s important that you seek out PR-specific clubs, communications societies, or student-run PR agencies at your school’s club fair. So why join these clubs? Joining these groups provides you with a supportive community, valuable networking opportunities, and hands-on experience that go beyond the classroom. Resumes might be needed; however, don’t let this shy you away from applying. Agencies are aware that freshmen have less experience. Don’t give up- everyone has to start somewhere!

  1. Connect with professors and industry professionals:
The knowledge one can gain from their professors is invaluable! Attending office hours, asking questions, and seeking advice on how to navigate the PR landscape are easy ways to connect! Additionally, actively using platforms like LinkedIn to connect with professionals in the field, your peers, and professors is a useful networking tool. It is important to seek help; Don't be afraid to reach out, express your interest, and ask for informational interviews or mentorship.

  1. Attend industry events and conferences:
Immerse yourself in the world of PR by attending conferences, workshops, and industry events hosted by your school. These gatherings offer the chance to listen to industry professionals, gain insights into current trends, and network with potential mentors and peers. This is a PR student’s dream! Make an effort to attend as many events as possible, introduce yourself, and be sure to ask questions during the Q&As. In PR, networking is huge: meet people and get your name out there!

Embarking on your journey in the PR industry as a college freshman is thrilling! By actively seeking opportunities, building relationships, and immersing yourself in the world of PR beyond the classroom, you'll not only discover your place within the industry but will also gain important skills to excel. College is the perfect time to explore yourself and discover what makes you happiest, giving you opportunities to learn and the chance to shape your future in PR.

You are ready! Take advantage of every opportunity and embrace each step of the way. It is never too early to start your journey!
